Does Wheelchair Ramp In FIB UNS Help?

In order to achieve World Class University, Sebelas Maret University provides disability-friendly-facility.  One of these facilities is a wheelchair ramp in the Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University. This ramp is winding and located in front of building one Faculty of Sciences. In fact, This winding ramp makes the wheelchair users hard to reach the floor.


Because of this ramp uses porcelain as the floor so it makes the path becomes slippery and improper to be used for wheelchair users. In addition, slope 1: 3 makes it difficult for wheelchair users to cross because short track distances with steep turns can be dangerous. A ramp should fulfill several conditions. Its slope should not exceed the ratio of height and length = 1:12

Sonny, the student of architecture UNS said that the length between right and left banister is 120 centimeters for the wheelchair can pass the ramp. The next aspect is to think over the incline of the ramp. We should calculate the maneuvering space for 2 wheelchair users and the baby cart. In addition, the material should use anti-slip type material, therefore, it can be used in wet or dry conditions.

In addition, this ramp is only available to reach the first floor. To reach the second floor, the wheelchair users can pass the path in front of the mosque, but the building has three floors and there are no disability facilities to accommodate the wheelchair users, so they cannot reach the third floor.

To solve this problem, FIB UNS should renovate the ramp according to the standard. Start with using precast tactile to replace porcelain.

Ida Kusuma Dewi was born on May 25, 1971, in Magetan.
